Diplomacy, Ethnic Conflict and Conflict Resolution: Revision



Diplomacy is the art and practice of conducting negotiations between representatives of groups or states. It usually refers to international diplomacy, the conduct of international relations through the intercession of professional diplomats with regard to issues of peace-making, trade, wars, economics, cultures, environment and human rights.

International treaties are usually negotiated by diplomats prior to endorsement by national politicians. In an informal or social sense, diplomacy is the employment of tact to gain strategic advantage or to find mutually acceptable solutions to a common challenge, one set of tools being the phrasing of statements in a non-confrontational or polite manner.

The process of diplomatic processes, dealing with the study of old documents, also owes its name to the above, but its present meaning is completely distinct from that of diplomacy.

What is Peace-building and conflict resolution?

Apply your knowledge that you have learned from our study of the Bosnian War in Sarajevo to a global context. With a partner, you will investigate another Ethnic Conflict around the world.  You will create a UN Style Situation Report applying what you learned from the using the terms from the blended learning unit on ethnicity and ethnic conflict to create your own Diplomatic Solution to the conflict. 

  1. Title

  2. Geographical overview & context of the conflict [Due: feb 8]

    1. You and your partner will research and decide on another ethnic conflict in our world. 

    2. To recieve full marks:  Consistently uses a wide range of specific terminology from the Peace and Conflict glossary effectively. Demonstrates detailed knowledge and understanding of historical context and the role ethnicity plays in the conflict. The response demonstrates understanding of concepts through thorough accurate descriptions, explanations and examples. This response also includes evidence of supplementary research to strengthen arguments.

  3. Perspective Writing. [due: feb 15]

    1. You and your partner will split up, and each investigate a 'single perspective.' You will write a piece from that perspective and have an in-class debate with your partner in character.

  4. Peace and Conflict Resolutions [due: feb 22]

    1. Using the Dayton Accords as a model, and the Strategic Art of Peace-building you and your partner will create a solution to the conflict you studied. 
    2. To receive full marks: Successfully synthesizes information from multiple perspectives to make valid, well-supported resolutions to ethnic conflict. Impressively identifies and applies the types of Peace Building and the implications of using them. Creates a detailed and well-thought out action plan to move forward.
  5. Media production [Due: feb 25]

    1. You and your partner will create a piece of media to demonstrate this resolution.
    2. To receive full marks: Demonstrate excellent understanding of application in the elements and principles of design. - demonstrates excellent application of skills and techniques to create and present art with Photoshop. - independently recognizes and interprets symbols through a combination of experience and effective search and analysis strategies. - able to communicate effectively through imagery by eliciting emotional, psychological, physical, and cognitive responses through well-designed imagery and digital media.

    1. This is a section to summarize your learning outcomes from this project. In a paragraph or two conclude your understandings of The Bosnian War, Ethnicity, Ethnic Conflict, The Dayton Accords, or Peacebuilding.

To receive full marks: 8 or more references listed in bibliography using correct MLA style. Annotations written in a clear, concise manner.The annotations explain and justify the inclusion of resources.
