Super Flat - The Analysis

Super Flat

Super Flat, a Japanese style of art related to anime, is all throughout Japan whether you see it or not. The movement of the art is not in the brush strokes, but the layers; it has an imense depth. Within each layer, the art is dragged in different directions and brings the piece together into one flattened image. Often falling into the Kawaii category, Super Flat is an art form scene in museums and on the streets. Bright, bold colors are placed on top of each other and flattened into a plastic-like final product.

As seen in the image to the left, repition is a key aspect of Super Flat. Pattern in choice of color does not seem to appear; however, the placement is planned in advance by the artist. This is a simple version of Super Flat, but perfect for looking at the movement of the art style. The flowers seemingly are jumping off the page and then back towards the middle.

Process

I see Super Flat in layers of patterns, so my first step in devolping a better understanding was to try out some different shapes and movements. This was a good warm up to start thinking about my final product.

The Idea

Super Flat is in laters, so why not make this more apparent? My plan is to have sheets of plastic with different designs on each hanging one in front of the other. From the front you will see a Super Flat image. From the side you will see the layers.
